SOME of the country's top surfers are heading for Strandhill this weekend.
The Strandhill Surf Festival and Sligo Open is taking place-wave permitting!
The Sligo Open is one of the biggest senior surfing competitions in Ireland. It has been held since the 1970's.
Development Officer with the Irish Surfing Association Zoe Lally said: "Strandhill is always a big event. Apart from the 100 or so competitors, there are always a lot more spectators."
As part of the weekend, there will be a Skateboard Festival, a surfers' market and demonstrations.
Sligo's Gearoid McDaid, pictured right, will be among the leading contenders for honours. He finished 20th at the World Championships and is an Irish junior and senior champion. He is on the Irish junior team for the European Championships in September.
Another local surfer Eva Martin is also a junior, but has won at senior grade at the Sligo Open.
Competitions will continue throughout the weekend.
They will feature Open Mens', Open Womens', Long Board and Body Board.
Zoe Lally said: "Let's hope we get good waves."
