SLIGO'S Rose of Tralee representative Irene Hennessy returned to her old school last Wednesday.

And she said it was "the scariest" thing she has done.

But for students and teachers in Coola Post Primary School, it was a celebration.

As she arrived, students were lined up to meet her, with a 'Welcome' banner aloft.

Irene said:

"It was enjoyable.

"They all welcomed me back and I had a good day."

During her visit, Irene showed her singing skills to loud applause.

She sang "Give me Love" from a school fundraising CD and "Riptide" by Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy.

School principal Damien McGoldrick said: "She was in with her sash.

"The students were delighted to see her.

"She sang two songs and there was a great atmosphere."

Irene's visit to Coola comes in advance of the regional Rose finals in Portlaoise during the June bank holiday weekend.

That's when representatives from each province will be chosen.

Irene, the middle child in a family of five nearby Sooey, was a student in Coola from 2007 to 2013.

She is now working in Home Store and More in Carraroe.

She is hoping to go to college next September.
