Liverpool supporters line out on hallowed turf at Anfield
Eight members of the Wexford Branch of the Liverpool FC Supporters club got the opportunity of a lifetime recently, as they managed to tread the same ground as their heroes while playing a five-a-side tournament at Anfield.
The Wexford Branch was one of 36 official fan clubs chosen to take part in the special event, from around 400 clubs nationwide who entered in the hope to get the chance to run onto the famous pitch.
The team that took part on the day contained members from all over the county: Eamonn O'Neill, Clonroche; Sean Doyle, Old Ross; Noel Sinnott, Wexford; Andrew Fortune, Tombrack; Damien McGrath, Enniscorthy; Pádraig Byrne, Wexford; Shane Murphy, Oulart and John Donovan, from Wexford.
It was very much a family affair for Eamonn, whose son Dylan took part in a youth tournament at the stadium in the morning and did the Wexford club proud, managing to win his penalty competition and a medal, and even rubbing shoulders with first team players Martin Kelly and Suso.
Following Dylan's success the rest of the group met at Anfield an hour before kick off, and after a couple of pictures with the famous Bill Shankly statue outside the ground, they were ushered in through the players lounge and into the dressing rooms to get changed. When the time came, the players made their way down the steps to the pitch to the tune of 'You'll Never Walk Alone', stopping to touch the 'This Is Anfield' sign for luck on the way past. There were fan clubs present from all over the world, creating a friendly but competitive atmosphere in the ground, and the Wexford boys found themselves up against stiff competition from clubs from Dublin, Finland, Leicestershire and the eventual champions New York who narrowly defeated them on penalties at The Kop End.
Following the three hour session, each member of the group was presented with an official certificate to say that they had played at Anfield, which will no doubt be proudly displayed in homes all over Wexford.
The Wexford Branch Liverpool Supporters Club is currently recruiting members for the coming season. The club manages to get tickets to most home games and have even managed to secure cup final tickets in the past couple of seasons.
