IT WAS a relatively quiet week around the tracks for Co. Wexford runners, but then there is only half the nights' racing for January and February.
There was a good win for the Brian Madigan-trained 'Mollie Eile' ('Crash-Great Plan') at Harold's Cross on Tuesday night last in the last race. After a slow enough start, 'Mollie' came through to beat 'Slaneyside Judy' by two and a half lengths in 29.57 and record her second race win of her career for owners Philip Moorhead and Nick Hammond (Enniscorthy). The runner-up is trained by another Enniscorthy man, Derek Kehoe.
On Saturday night at Waterford there was a good Wexford presence but alas there was only the one success, and that honour went to the Michael Furlong (Enniscorthy)-owned 'High Sparky' ('Ace Hi RumbleTrailer Dawn') who was scoring his second race win too.
Trapping okay from his trap one box, he was third turning into the back and sticking tight to the rail off the last bend paid dividends as 'Sparky' went on to score well in 29.57 also - a coincidence that both winners scored in the same time and were scoring their second race wins - what odds?
Ferns trainer Brendan Murphy and owner Carol O'Connor got a nice new year boost when their dog, 'Rockmount Eagle', received the dog of the year title at Newbridge track for the second year.
'Rockmount' is the kind of dog any owner would love to own as his record speaks for itself - 16 wins, 13 seconds and ten thirds from 48 starts. He is currently open grade and this April '09 son of 'Westmead HawkRockmount Flo Jo' is getting better and better, so expect plenty more wins this year.
