Once again we defied the gloomy predictions of Met. Eireann who had forecast heavy rain in the south-east for the Thursday before Christmas. Instead we had quite a mild day for late December and the 15 teams who participated in our weekly competition got around dry as the proverbial bone whilst enjoying their game of golf into the bargain. With placing everywhere and the fairway bunkers out of play, we expected some high scoring and that is the way it turned out.

Putting together two nines of (50/50), the team of Denis Kirwan (11), Willie Whitty (19), Willie Naddy (19) and Tony Sexton (27) were our winners with a fantastic score of 100 points. Only a point behind in second place came a threeperson team which shot 99 points (93, plus the usual sixpoint bonus). That team was made up of Andy Ronan (13), Patsy Farrell (17) and Liam Glasheen (18).

On 97 points and in third spot came Nigel Morrissey (13), Jim 'Ross' Ryan (16), Dick O'Neill (18) and Ollie Brennan (24). Fourth prize went to another three-person team, John Murphy (16), Paddy Hayles (17) and Tom O'Neill (20), with 92 points, whilst fifth prize was won by Aidan Kent (14), Richie Aylward (17) and Fr. Jim Curtis (17), that team shooting 85 plus six giving them 91 points.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Eddie Keher (ninth hole) and Denis Kirwan on the eleventh.

Best wishes go to our regular competitor, Frank Boyle. We are delighted to see him making such good progress after his recent hip replacement and look forward to welcoming him back in the new year.

Our next outing is on Thursday, January 3, at the usual time. In the meantime here's wishing a very bright and prosperous new year to each and every one connected with the Seniors' group. Many thanks for all your co-operation during 2012 and here's hoping that 2013 will be as good health-wise and golfing wise for everyone.

Unfortunately we had to cancel our competition due to bad weather on the Wednesday before Christmas, but our Christmas party went ahead with great numbers of members present. It was uplifting to see a great group of new Junior girls there also, enjoying themselves.

It started with mince pies and mulled wine being served, and then Ivan Dungan tinkled the ivories with lovely Christmas carols. Anita Mahon, Munster rugby choir director, then got the singing under way and there were a few lovely larks heard singing away to their hearts' content. Well done all, it was a very nice way to muster up some Christmas spirit in us.

All recent prize winners were presented by the lady Captain Ger, and Santa Claus also made a surprise visit even though it was a very busy time for him. Thank you Santa.

The first nine-hole competition winners were: 1, Ger Mackay (12), 20 points; 2, Joanne Hartley (29), 17 points (last three); 3, Kate Mackay (36), 17 points.

Second nine-hole competition winners: 1, Eleanor Roche (17), 17 points (last three); 2, Marie Therese Wall (28), 17 points; 3, Mary J. Maher (33), 17 points. Well done ladies.

Just a reminder that there is an ongoing nine-hole competition running. Enter as often as you like.

There is a Christmas club classic running until January 6, teams of four, so come on ladies, out we go.

On Friday, December 21, our lady Captain, Ger, led off the 10k sponsored swim in the Kennedy Memorial Pool in the hope of trying to raise enough funds to install a much-needed lift in the golf club in the near future. This is the first of a few ventures to raise the necessary funds, so members, if you forgot to sponsor any of the swimmers, it's not too late.

Six swimmers (Ger Donohoe, Mary Kavanagh, Ellen Howlett, Liz Bennett, John Donohoe and Donagh Minihan) each completed a mile in record-breaking times. Well done all. Rio, watch out!

A special thanks to Martin Kirby, manager, for the use of the pool.

The mid-week nine-hole competition in the week before Christmas fell foul of the weather and the weekend singles could only be played on Sunday (the course was closed on Saturday).

Anthony P. Doyle (17) came in near the end of the field with an outstanding 42 points and won first prize. Young Jack O'Sullivan (22) was unlucky to be pushed into second with 42 points also.

Eoin Devlin (5) shot level par for 41 points to take third prize from Robbie Kehoe and Mark Read.
