NEW ROSS SENIORS
Last Thursday we were once again blessed with a mild November day where the sun shone and there was hardly a puff of wind to hinder our 16 teams who battled it out for the weekly prizes. With winter rules now in operation and placing both on the fairways and in the rough, scores are higher than normal and the target of 90 points is regularly surpassed. Again, that was the case in our latest outing when the winning team brought in a terrific score of 94 points to emerge clear victors.
John Kennedy (14), John Fitzpatrick (18), Tom O'Neill (20) and Tommy Grennan (21) scored consistently over the 18 holes, with 48 points on the first nine and 46 on the back nine giving them a grand total of 94 points.
Two points behind on 92 were John Murphy (15), John Joe Murray (19), John Vereker (19) and Brian Dolan (23).
Third spot after a countback went to the threeman team of Joe O'Farrell (16), Willie Whitty (19) and Kieran O'Grady (19) who had 84 points plus the mandatory bonus of six, bringing them up to 90 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Fr. Jim Curtis on the ninth and Willie Whitty on the eleventh.
The old bugbear of slow play again raised its ugly head on Thursday last when one team lost two holes. Why do certain people insist on putting out when the best two scores have been recorded on a hole instead of moving on to the next one?
The culprits last week should know better as they are all experienced golfers, and with the light fading fast in November they should think of other teams on the course.
Our A.G.M. is planned for Thursday, December 6, at 10 a.m. sharp and the Christmas outing and dinner is on the following Thursday, December 13. Meanwhile, all who have input into our handicapping structure are asked to return the questionnaire as soon as possible to Kevin Treacy either via email or hard copy.
We will shortly have a first aid lecture and be shown the correct use of the defribillator, with the date and time still to be confirmed.
The A.G.M. of New Ross Golf Club will take place in the clubhouse this Friday, November 23. All male members are requested to attend for 8 p.m. sharp.
Winter league round one, Sunday, November 4: 1, M. O'Mahony (8), 35 points (last nine); 2, S. Murphy (16), 35 points (last six); 3, D. Hosey (6), 35 points (last nine); gross, P.J. O'Connor (8), 26 points; Cat. 1, J. Flynn (8), 29 points; Cat. 2, L. Murphy (11), 31 points; Cat. 3, J. Wallace (21), 35 points.
In last week's Tuesday competition, 15 holes stableford, the winners of vouchers were Connie Doyle (9) with 34 points, Cora Mernagh (12) with 31 points in second place and Mag Mooney (8) with 30 points who came third. This competition continues for one more week.
In the nine holes competition number 13, Ursula Cousins came first with 20 points (back six), Marie Dunphy was second with 20 points, and Maeve McCauley was third with 19 points.
In the nine holes competition number 14, Anne Bernie took the honours with 23 points while Vera Garry was second with 20 points and Catherine Lawless came third with 19 points.
