A NUMBER of Wexford's longest-serving athletics officials will have the honour of being on the team of principal officials at the national Novice and Uneven Ages cross-country championships, to be held in Adamstown on Sunday, December 9.
Nicky Cowman from St. Killian's A.C. in Crossabeg sits on the National Juvenile committee for the Athletics Association of Ireland, and was instrumental in bringing the upcoming national championships to Co. Wexford. As former Chairman of the Board of Athletics Leinster, Nicky is one of the most esteemed track referees to be found in Ireland, and will bring his vast experience to the All-Irelands. With national titles up for grabs when the best of the Irish Juvenile and Novice runners compete, Nicky's professionalism and calm nature on the track is valued at the highest levels in athletics in Ireland.
Joining Nicky on the officials team will be international starter, Pat O'Leary from Bree A.C. Pat has been a familiar face on the start line for all athletes from Co. Wexford for many years. With regular honours at county, Leinster and national level, he was chosen as the official starter for the European cross-country championships in 2010.
Known for his accuracy and efficiency, Pat will ensure that the national championships in Adamstown will start at precisely 11.30 a.m. and that the race schedule will be strictly adhered to.
Also officiating will be John Joe Doyle from D.M.P. A.C. in Drinagh. As a former international cross-country athlete, John Joe has trained the county Juvenile teams over the past weeks, meeting each Sunday morning at Raven Point to put them through their paces.
His training has led to qualification success for two of his charges, Michael Carroll from his own club, D.M.P., and Luke Byrne from the national host club, Adamstown A.C.
Both athletes will represent Wexford on the Leinster teams at the All-Ireland. John Joe will be one of the chief track stewards at the national championships, in his usual position on the finish straight.
Former Athletics Wexford Chairman, Jim Corcoran, from Bree A.C., will be another chief official, alternating the track distances. With three Leinster cross-country championships being held on the Adamstown course in Rothwell's since 2009, Jim has a permanent job in charge of controlling race lap distances.
Athletics Wexford is providing almost all of the track stewards for this year's nationals, with coaches and officials from the 16 clubs throughout the county all providing the essential organisation needed to ensure the Model county sets the highest of standards for event organisation. Co-ordination of the championships is being provided by Adamstown A.C. in association with the Competitions and Juvenile offices of Athletics Ireland.
With huge crowds expected to attend, certain traffic restrictions will be in place around Adamstown. Details will be published closer to December 9 and will also be available on the new Athletics Wexford website - www.wexfordathletics.com.
