Gorey girls advance at Abbey's expense
GOREY COMMUNITY SCHOOL 4-3 ABBEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE 1-1 GOREY COMMUNITY School made up for the recent elimination of their Senior camogie side when the Juniors recorded an emphatic home victory over Abbey Community College in the provincial semi-final last week.
The visitors attacked from the off but their efforts were soon negated by clinical play from Róisín Egan, Aoife Hughes and Lorna Cushe. In mucky conditions, Ellen Roche opened Gorey's account with a well-taken pointed free after eight minutes.
An onslaught of goals soon followed to the overall benefit of the Slaneysiders. Caoimhe Molloy scrambled the ball to the net which was quickly followed by a fine major from Hayley Murphy. The valiant efforts of Abbey's Iona Heffernan and Tara Leacy were effective as Heather Dwyer managed to find the net for them five minutes from the break. The half closed with a lobbed goal by Ellen Roche which created a 31 to 1-0 interval scoreline.
Gorey C.S. showed no signs of stopping after the resumption as Hayley Murphy swiftly pointed. While the Waterford ladies had a large amount of possession, they lacked scoring intent which was punished by Gorey as Caoimhe Molloy rifled the ball to the net. Orla Crowe and Niamh Ahearne exchanged points but Jack O'Brien's final whistle yielded scenes of jubilation as the girls in green advanced to the Leinster final.
