Shamrocks stay in hunt for last eight

SHAMROCKS KEPT their prospects of qualifying for the knockout stages very much alive with a comfortable eight-point victory over Marshalstown-Castledockrell in this Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship Group B game at Bree on Wednesday last.
Apart from brief spells in both periods, Shamrocks dominated this game and had they shown more penetration in front of goal their victory margin would have been far greater. However, in the end former Rathnure star Lar Ronan will be happy with the progress of his charges as they have ideally set themselves up for their concluding group games.
It was another disappointment for an injury-ravaged Marshalstown-Castledockrell outfit who never really looked like getting any points out of this game. Apart from the scoring exploits of veteran 'Mitch' Jordan they had little to offer in attack, while the defence came under intense pressure for lengthy stretches.
Shamrocks opened the game impressively, racing into a 0-4 to nil lead inside six minutes as Graham Denton, Bob Jacob (free), Seán Wildes and Anthony Wallace got in on the scoring act. A Colm Bennett eighth-minute pointed free opened his side's account and with Jordan and Bennett going on to pick off some excellent points, the sides were deadlocked (0-4 each) after 13 minutes.
But the Shamrocks regained control, adding points through Wallace, O'Connor (three), Seán Wildes and Cyril Thorpe, and with Bob Jacob finishing a Wildes cross to the net two minutes before the break they went in with a comfortable 1-12 to 0-5 interval lead.
After Thorpe added his side's second goal within three minutes of the re-start, the second-half became a formality, as all Marshalstown-Castledockrell had to offer was the point-taking of Jordan and Bennett, but it was never going to be enough to upset their more confident opponents.
