Kilanerin in control
KILANERIN WILL be happy with many aspects of their game as they returned to winning ways with a decisive eight-point victory over Horeswood in this Tom Doyle Supplies Senior Football championship Group A game at Bellefield on Sunday last.
This victory was even more decisive than the final margin suggests as Kilanerin were in total control as their combination of quick passing, along with their ability to play the long ball to their inside forwards, proved decisive as they ripped apart the Horeswood defence.
As the Kilanerin attack seized on every opportunity, this was in stark contrast to their opponents who relied on the individual efforts of P.J. Banville to keep them in the game, but despite his excellent scoring contribution it still was not near enough to seriously challenge their opponents.
The trend of this game was evident from the opening exchanges as Kilanerin raced into a 1-2 to nil lead inside the opening six minutes. Matty Forde pointed an early free, which was followed by an excellent long-range effort from Niall Hughes.
Then Forde turned a Dean O'Toole cross to the net as his side totally dominated this opening spell. After Bobby Hughes had extended the lead, Horeswood eventually opened their account with a Mikey Rowe point after nine minutes but the score only brought a token response from his colleagues.
Nine minutes before the interval, Kilanerin showed their attacking qualities as a delightful Matty Forde crossfield ball picked out Aidan Jones whose accurate pass across the face of the goal was punched to the net by Mark Gethings, giving his side a 2-4 to 0-4 lead, as Banville had tagged on three points in between.
One minute later Dean O'Toole got his fist to a great Peter Hughes cross to find the net, a score that helped his side to a 3-6 to 0-7 interval lead.
Horeswood did not look capable of hauling back this deficit as Kilanerin continued to impose themselves on the game. After Forde and Banville had exchanged early second-half points, it was still Kilanerin who continued to control matters, and it was only late points from Banville that gave his side a more flattering final scoreline.
