NEW ROSS RUGBY: New Ross 14, Wexford 36: In what can only be described as a Jekyl and Hyde performance, New Ross Under-13s succumbed to their worst defeat of the season. In a game marred with mistakes right from the kick-off, the home side never gave themselves a chance.
Straight from the kick-off, Wexford ran straight through the New Ross defence to score under the posts. This was converted to make it 7-0. New Ross came back at them for a while and were camped in the opposition's half until Wexford intercepted a pass to score and convert under the posts to go 14-0 up.
Again the Ross boys came out firing and again they were playing the game in the Wexford half, but again a stray pass was intercepted and another breakaway try was scored and converted to make the score 21-0.
At this stage, frustration was setting in as the home side had the majority of the possession and were camped in the Wexford half, but silly passing and missed tackles were the ruination of them.
The first-half finished 21-7 after some great work by the forwards, with Kevin 'Machine' O'Donohoe driving over the line and then stepping up to convert.
New Ross started the second-half as they finished the first, camped out in Wexford's half, but again another silly pass was intercepted and another breakaway try was scored to make the score 26-7. Things were going from bad to worse for the home side and after another clear missed tackle in midfield, another try was run in from their own half to make the score 31-7.
The home side rallied again and had Wexford pinned back, but history repeated itself and another intercepted pass set the Slaneysiders off to score their final try to go 36-7 up. The New Ross lads were playing for pride at this stage and they made it back into the Wexford '22 where D.D. Kehoe powered over the line to make it 36-14, with 'Machine' converting.
The frustrating part about the game was that New Ross had the territory and most of the possession, but stupid passes and missed tackles set Wexford on their way. Four intercepted tries would be the undoing of any team, but taking nothing away from Wexford as they deserved the win.
Ross were lazy in patches but brilliant in others, and some bad decisions by the players at times robbed themselves of a fighting chance. On the plus side, the back row of D.D., 'Machine' and 'Spider' Sutton played well as did Charlie Murphy and captain Robbie Fitzgerald, with Michael Whelan in the thick of the action as usual.
Without the mistakes it was a good performance but this will have to go down as a lesson learned. Onwards and upwards.
The Under-15s were invited to Waterpark for a friendly on Saturday last. Such is the interest in the club this year that they could field two teams.
The second team, which is made up of the younger players, lined out first. This was a good test for the less-experienced guys. Even though they lost, they played very well and gave everything they had and, on a much more important note, they proved to the coaches that they can play and contest for places on the first team.
The first team knew that the Waterpark firsts would be an extremely tough team due to their style of rugby: strong contention for the ball, realignment and quick hands. This meant that Ross would have to battle hard in the forwards and tackle hard and realign quickly in the backs.
It wasn't long before Cormac Tierney was again flying at the opposition with ball in hand before going over the line for the first of his two tries. Morgan Purcell went over twice after some lovely breaking runs and off-loads from the Ross captain, Callum Crean.
Saliu Cullen added to the score with another try after a quick penalty tap on the Waterpark '22. Barry Roche converted three of the five conversions. Waterpark constantly tested New Ross and broke through after a line-out on the Ross five-metre line for a hard-earned final score, leaving it New Ross 31, Waterpark 5.
Overall, this is a team that is getting stronger and stronger as the weeks go on. Having so many young players with the 15s is great for the team, and the club. Well done to these hard-working young guys.

The club travelled to the Leinster even ages cross-country championships which were held in Avondale House, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. This was a very challenging course with an uphill finish.
Our Under-12 girls were Grace Mullally (20th) and Linda Lawlor. Grace also scored on the county team, taking home a bronze medal.
The boys' Under-12 race turned out to be the race of the day, with St. Joseph's Oisín Griffin and Castlecomer's Conor Clarke battling it out to the finish. They were neck and neck to the line with Oisín being edged into second by the narrowest of margins. The rest of the boys' team featured Killian Griffin (16th), Rory O'Connor, Ian Byrne, Darragh McDonald, Paul Murphy and Kevin Saunders. The Griffin brothers also scored on the county team, receiving gold medals.
The Under-14 girls' team of Eva Roche (fifth), Helen Hoynes (15th), Emma Hokey and Sarah Lawlor ran a great race, with Eva and Helen scoring on the county team, taking home silvers
The Under-14 boys were Richie Hennessy (14th) and Richie Murphy, with Hennessy scoring for the county team and receiving a silver medal. The girls' Under-16 team was Ruby Harvey and Mia Griffin.
The Masters men were represented by Rocky Mernagh, Larry Lacey and Seán Hokey. Well done to all these athletes who represented their club and county at this level.
Three of our club members travelled to Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday for the 33rd Dublin City marathon. Patrick Bookle finished the course in a fantastic time of three hours, 58 seconds. Tom McDonald, who was taking part in his first marathon, ran a time of four hours, 14minutes. Breda Hennessy, who is no stranger to marathons, finished in a time of four hours, 52 minutes. Well done to all.
The club travelled to Kilmacow on Sunday last for the county 'B' crosscountry and the Novice men and Novice women county races. The Juveniles were represented by Niamh, Connor, Erin Foley, Patrick O'Connor, Aidan Lawlor, Linda Lawlor and Sarah Lawlor.
The Novice women fielded two teams in the race with some of the ladies experiencing cross-country for the first time, and what a start it was as they took home team silver and team bronze. On the teams were Stella Sheehan, Mary McDonald, Triona Foley, Catherine Barrett, Tracey Malone and Anna Dwyer.
The Novice men also fielded two teams with a few first-timers taking part. On the teams were Rocky Mernagh, Paul Sheehan, Seán Hokey, Tom McDonald, Ciarán Cullen, Chris McNamara, John McDonald and Mick Dwyer. Well done.
