New Ross Boat Club recently took part in the Irish National Rowing Championships. This three-day event showcases the best racing Ireland has to offer with 1,049 crews taking part in 264 races at the National Rowing Centre at Farran Wood, Cork.

Many of Ireland's high performance athletes were taking part including Olympians Paul and Gary O'Donovan, Sanita Puspure and Claire Lambe.

New Ross had a total of 25 athletes competing over the three days with some super racing by all.

The first of the medals came on Sunday from the junior-14 crew of Amy Barrett, Aoibhinn Slater, Ella O'Hanlon and Jane Sutton. They got off to a slow start and were in last place but they soon caught up with the crews and just pipped Carlow on the line.

The club's second junior-14 quad also had a great race in the same final and finished fifth.

Next up was the women's junior-18 quad of Laura Brown, Shona Tierney, Aoife Coughlan and Faye Prendergast.

The girls had a comfortable heat coming second which put them in a good lane for the final. Unfortunately the crew just couldn't match the Lee side who stormed out in front but they stuck with the strong Workman's quad to take third place. This is a great achievement for the girls, stepping up to this grade for the first year.

After a short break, the club will be back for its summer camp on August 14, 15 and 16. To register contact Sonya at 086 8426685.
