WHILE last year The Gathering saw record numbers of people returning to Ireland from abroad to trace their roots, it was an extra special for one Irish-American.

Mary Powell from Churchville, New York, was delighted to be selected by family records database RootsIreland.ie to win a holiday to her ancestral home.
Mary's roots were traced back to the Duggan family of Wexford and as part of her prize RootsIreland.ie paid for her and her husband to fly over and visit her ancestors' homestead at The Burrow near Rosslare. Mary was delighted to visit Wexford and meet up with her long-lost cousins. She said she was 'truly overwhelmed' by the experience and says that she plans to return to Ireland very soon - next time with her extended family in tow so that they can learn more about their Irish heritage.
Tourism Ireland have said that they will continue to encourage the Irish diaspora home to trace their Irish heritage in 2014 and beyond.
