Rathnure gets ready for Martin Codd weekend
Details of the inaugural Martin Codd weekend festival, putting Rathnure on the map, have been announced. The organisers are confident that Rathnure will be the place to be over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The programme is intended to capture the spirit of a man who was well known across the country where GAA games and music are enjoyed. A member of the All-Ireland winning Wexford hurling team of 1956, Martin Codd turned to singing and music after retiring from the sport, enjoying success in the charts with The Herdsmen, with whom he played all the leading venues in Ireland and Britain.
Events over the weekend will appeal to all ages, with top dance band Gina & The Champions and Mount Everest climber Frank Nugent already confirmed to lead activities.
Friday, August 1: at 10 p.m. in Rathnure Hall, dance with music by Gina & The Champions. Admission €10.
Saturday, August 2: Rathnure Hall is the venue for a special variety concert featuring musicians, singers, sketches and comedy. Many of the featured performers shared the stage with Martin over the years. Included on the bill are original members of The Herdsmen, the Codd Family group and The Bannow Boys. Admission €10.
Sunday, August 3: the monster field day at Rathnure GAA grounds will feature a hurling skills triathlon, skittles, find the treasure, arm wrestling and bale tossing, with bouncy castles in a dedicated kiddie play area as well as plenty of food and refreshments on offer.
Sunday, August 3: barbecue at Conran's in Rathnure with music and craic, following the field day.
Monday, August 4: walking in the Blackstairs led by Frank Nugent, following the ridge of the Blackstairs, along the route of the traditional Mountain Sunday.
