THE FIRST in a series of children's books focusing on farm safety has been given life by Gorey mother Cheryl Poole.
The family's sheepdog Bruno the pup plays a starring role in the books, along with his best friend the Farmer.
'Farmer and Me! Making Silage' explains all about silage and details safety around tractors and silage making. Cheryl, a native of Co. Down, is married to Alan and is mother to Jacob and Isabelle. She decided to write the book after searching herself for such a book but not finding anything suitable.
She explained how she 'married into' a farming life herself, as she is not originally from a farming background. 'Watching my own children and their friends on the farm, I saw it's so much fun and really fascinating for them, but as a parent you see the dangers too, especially around machinery and stock,' she said. 'I was looking for books to teach farm safety to the kids, but couldn't find anything suitable. I put pen to paper and came up with a couple of books myself.
'They will focus on what happens on the farm and how to be safe on the farm,' she added.
She approached a publishing company to selfpublish, and the illustration department came up with the imagery for the book, according to the photographs and descriptions she provided.
'I'm very happy with the book and I've had some very positive feedback,' said Cheryl. 'I never intended write children's books, but when you hear of children loving the book and having it read to them at bedtime, you get a kick out of it.' The book is mainly aimed at two- to seven-year-olds. The second book on milking cows is almost ready for publication.
She was invited to launch her book at Forest Park Leisure Centre in Courtown, where she and the family regularly visit, and Centre Manager Shane Prendergast was only too delighted to launch the book for her and wish her well.
'Farmer and Me' is available in Forest Park, Courtown; in Goff 's Centra, Bridgetown, and through Facebook - FarmerandMe. It retails at €12.50, and is also available on Amazon for £12.99 stg.
