DESPITE THE cold, damp start to the New Year, activity on the River Barrow continues with crews from New Ross Boat Club on the water from 8.45 a.m. on some Saturday and every Sunday mornings through to 1 p.m.
The club members have gym circuit training and running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the dark evenings. This will change to on the water as soon as the brighter evenings arrive.
Those who started training in September are now out in the racing quads and will be travelling to Carlow on January 20 to compete in the first event of the year. Over 20 oars people will be representing the club on the day, from senior crews to under 16's in boys and girls.
The club finished off 2012 in style with Carrie Nolan winning her under 16's single sculling event at the National Rowing centre in Cork just before Christmas.
The club will be taking on new recruits for training from Sunday, February 3. Those interested should drop over to the club after 6 p.m. on Wednesday nights or 10.30 a.m. on Sunday mornings for information or to put their name down to row. The only requirements are one must be over 13 years old and be able to swim.
