A LARGE crowd attended the official opening ceremony for the New Ross Town Council allotment project in Irishtown on Friday.
Initially opened over two years ago behind the Mercy Convent, over 40 people now use the allotments on a daily basis to grow fresh fruit and vegetables.
Cathaoirleach of New Ross Town Council, Niamh FitzGibbon spoke at the event about the history of allotments and about how opening them was one of the best achievements of the council in recent times. Several councillors were also in attendance at one of their last public functions prior to the disbanding of New Ross Town Council after several hundred years later this month.
A large number of allotment holders also attended the event, which was organised by Town Clerk Anthony Bailey.
