LAST Friday's Munster Schools Competition at the Majestic course in Mallow saw one of the three St Brendan's College, Killarney teams advance to the National Finals, but not the one that was expected as the school's second team of Jason O'Sullivan, Michael Cronin and David Harnett finished sixth overall with a score of four under par.
While their score was 20 shots behind the winning score of 24 under par posted by Davis College, Mallow it was good enough for a Top Seven finish which means they will take part in the national competition in St Bridgets, Co Kildare on Friday October 26.
The fancied team of Creagh Courtney, Jason Brosnan and Jason O'Brien's total of five over par was only good enough for 10th overall while the other team from The Sem of Sean Courtney, Mark Harnett and Jack O'Connor also failed to advance.
In local action last weekend the Johnny Kelly Memorial Scramble, sponsored by Weldon's Machinery, Killarney, took place in Deerpark and for the second week in a row Andrew O'Callaghan from the Gleneagle was on a winning Three Ball Scramble team, this time teaming up with Deerpark's Jerry and Paddy Murphy to win the Overall Nett with a score of 68 Nett.
That was one shot better than his team-mate of last week St John Kellihers team's score of 69 which he posted with John Kelly and Betty O'Brien. The Overall Gross prize was won by the club's Gents Captain Ger Casey, Kieran Buckley and John Murphy with a score of 85.
