MUNSTER CLUB JUNIOR 'B'. FOOTBALL FINAL. Scartaglin 2-8 Diarmuid O Mathunas (Cork) 0-7
SCARTAGLIN brought a second Munster title to the East Kerry district on Sunday evening, following up on Dr Crokes' victory in the Munster Senior Club Final the same afternoon with a victory over Diarmuid O Mathunas of Cork in the Knockaderry Invitational Final (for county junior B and novice champions) in West Limerick last Sunday.
The final had been brought forward due to Scart's scheduled semi-final opponents Fethard of Tipperary pulling out of the competition but the change of opposition did nothing to affect their performance on the day in Knockaderry.
Goals from Mike Horan and Noel Rahilly at crucial stages of what was a keenly contested encounter. The Kerry Novice champions had to wait nine minutes for their first score; Bernard Cronin charging up from defence to kick a point after two points from O Mathuna's Patrick Crowley had given the Cork side the early advantage.
Two minutes later Scart went ahead with a good piece of fortune as Mike Horan's free dropped into the net for their first goal. Pa Rahilly and Tim Coakley built on the goal with follow up points but three points from O Mathuna's John Paul O'Callaghan kept the Bandon based side in the game at halftime, 1-3 to 0-5 Scartaglin's lead at the break.
Mathunas levelled the game up after the restart but Scart responded with their second goal in the 34th minute. Substitute Denis Lenihan's '45' dropped short but Noel Rahilly was on hand to guide the ball into the net as the St Kieran's side once again caught out their opposition with a high ball.
Rahilly put in a ' Man of the Match' display for Scart as further points from Lenihan, Tom Boyle and Mike Coakley gave them a 26 to 0-6 lead. John O'Donovan kicked Mathunas' only other point and while the Cork side tried hard to pile on the pressure in the closing stages, Bernard Murphy, Jer O'Connor and Padraig Reidy were more than equal to the task with Mike Coakley and Daniel Murphy gaining vital possession at midfield for the Kerry side.
Pa Rahilly and Lenihan kicked what proved to be the insurance scores for Scart in a seven point win as they keep the cup in the St Kierans District following Brosna's triumph in the same competition 12 months ago. It completes a sixth successive victory for the Kerry Novice champions in this competition and puts Kerry on course for a second consecutive clean sweep of the Munster Club Football titles pending the result of the Kenmare vs. Cappamore Munster Junior Final in Mallow this Sunday.
