COUNTY SFC ROUND THREE
ST MICHAELS / F MORE.......1-12 KENMARE.......................0-15 (AET)
A GAME of contradictions in a lot of respects last Saturday evening in Foilmore.
Firstly St Michaels / Foilmore should have been well on their way to victory at the break, seven wides preventing them from having a more comfortable lead than 1-6 to 0-5 at halftime. Secondly Kenmare should have won the game in normal time, some truly woeful shooting on their part in the second half prevented them from getting the job done. Thirdly, despite all the wayward attempts, Stephen O'Brien ensured there would be another meeting between the two sides with a peach of free just beyond the stand side of the pitch to put a decent gloss on what was otherwise a disappointing encounter in Foilmore.
Kenmare were forced into a number of changes before throw-in, four from the team named in the programme with Paul O'Connor's absence with a hamstring injury the most notable. Liam O'Shea made a promising start for the visitors, but St Michaels / Foilmore soon settled down setting up some fine passing movements into their full-forward line, Flor O'Sullivan having to be shrewd in the 13th minute to prevent Eanna O'Connor skipping through for a promising chance.
Johnny Clifford missed a gaping chance for the home side two minutes later but he made up for it in the 26th minute with an easy finish to the net to make it 1-5 to 0-3. Stephen O'Brien responded with two points before Eanna made it a four point lead for the South Kerry side at the interval.
Mark Crowley's introduction at half-time reinvigorated the district as they began to gain a better foothold at midfield, Mark Griffin's splendid break out of defence in the 38th minute, one of only three points for St Michaels / Foilmore in the second-half. DJ Brennan's introduction helped matters on the scoreboard, but at 1-9 to 09 with five minutes left, the home side seemed to have done enough to hold out, but Gavin Crowley, Brennan and O'Shea didn't let the missed chances elsewhere get to them in sending the game to extra-time.
Kenmare substitute John Spillane fisted a glorious chance off the post in the first period and there was a double attempt at goal for Kenmare denied by Brian Smith and his defence in the same period, but Ballyfoilmore outscored their opponents by 0-2 to 0-1.
Brennan and Sean Fogarty exchanged points, however, after a foul on Liam O'Shea in the 74th minute saw Kenmare were awarded a penalty. Smith was equal to Mark Crowley's strike however, yet Liam O'Shea's conversion of the resulting ' 45 saw Kenmare come away with some reward. The St Michaels / Foilmore goalie also had to bat a dangerous ball towards substitute Shane Cremin, but Kenmare would soon get a free near the sideline to tie up the contest.
Stephen O'Brien was equal to the challenge and what the game lacked in skill certainly made up for in
drama.
