AS the 2013 track and field season draws to a close, it was the turn of our senior athletes at the Woodie's DIY Senior Championships at Morton Stadium, Santry. The event attracted some of the best athletes in the country, despite the somewhat uncertain weather conditions.
As last year's champion, Claire Fitzgerald (Tralee Harriers) entered as favourite for the ladies shot and discus and didn't disappoint, winning gold in both and picking up bronze in the javelin for good measure.
Laura Crowe (An Riocht) was in sparkling form, winning the ladies 1,500m in a time of 4:13, streets ahead of the field.
Mairead O'Neill (Gneeveguilla) won bronze in the ladies hammer and club mate Hannah O'Sullivan did well to reach the final of the ladies discus, but finished outside of the medals.
Other notable performances came from Alan O'Connor (Tralee Harriers) in the mens shot and discus and Niall Prendiville (Farranfore Maine Valley) in the mens walk.
Elsewhere, the Kilgobnet 4-mile road race, run or walk, takes place on Friday, August 2 at 8pm. Organised by Star of the Laune AC under AAI rules, this year's event is in aid of Liam's Lodge and the Romanian Education Project. Entry is €10 per person with a family rate of €20.
In addition to main prizes for the first three senior men and women there will be prizes for first junior and fit4life athletes and spot prizes. Refreshments will be served, so come along and support these worthy causes.
