IT was a sad week for us all in Kerry Pitch & Putt with the sad passing of our Registrar Maura Brosnan in the early honours of last Wednesday morning.
Maura was a diligent servant of both the Gleneagle club and the Kerry County Board PPUI and the esteem she was held in was borne out in the numbers that turned out to form a guard of honour for her at her funeral last Friday evening in Killarney.
The County Board offers its deepest sympathies to her family, friends and in particular her Gleneagle playing partners whom she shared many great memories with.
On the course there was a number of Matchplay tournaments decided in both Castleisland and Deerpark with Danny O'Leary's Captain's Prize also down for decision in Tralee. Castleisland's Doubles Matchplay went to the team of Pat Mitchell and John O'Regan as they defeated Donal O'Connor and John Clifton in the final by 2&1. Pat missed out on winning the Singles title as well, losing out to James Broderick in the final by 8&7.
There was better luck for the aforementioned John Clifton in the Deerpark Gents Matchplay final (sponsored by Murphy's Bar, Killarney) as he defeated 2008 winner Kieran Buckley on a score of 2&1. In Tralee, Danny O'Leary's Captain's Prize went to Aidan O'Sullivan with a total of 90 points, one shot better than Jamie Blake on 89, who defeated Declan O'Connell on countback.
The Gross section was won by National Strokeplay champion Jonathon Goodall on 92 points, ahead of Jason O'Regan in second on 90. On the U-16 front, St John Kelliher from Deerpark was the winner of the Lakeside U-16 Scratch Cup in Templemore, Co Tipperary on Saturday with club-mate Stephen McCarthy claiming the 1013 prize.
This weekend sees the National Scramble Qualifiers take place in Castleisland on Saturday afternoon with the finals of the tournament down for decision in Meath's Navan and Castletown courses on the October Bank Holiday weekend. The Paul O'Sullivan Memorial Three Ball Scramble which is our last competition of the season takes place on Sunday October 7 in the Gleneagle.
