LEGION GAA Club in Killarney might be living under the shadow, competitively, of Dr Crokes, but it has always kept its own flag flying very proudly and there was plenty to like about its involvement in greyhound racing at Tralee Track last Saturday night.
The club sponsored an A2 525yds sweepstake at the Oakview, which acted as a fund-raiser for it and it reflected well on those at the organisational end that a winner's purse of €1,100 was made available. That €1,100 was gratefully claimed by Steven Moriarty, of Tralee, who saw his charge, Boher Supreme (Balintore Brave - Knock Princess), get up on the line for a short-head victory over the front-running Mossend Apollo in 29.15.
The hot favourite, as expected, was Fire Height Star, which had clocked 28.77 and 28.69 en route to the final, but he didn't shoot from traps this time and then got very seriously baulked at the first bend, throwing him completely out of contention. In sharp contrast, Mossend Apollo blew out of trap 2 and he made a valiant attempt for a trap-to-line victory. Boher Supreme (trap 1) was just a length behind him at the third bend and closing, but he was forced to check at this point and this appeared to seriously impair his chances.
However, all was far from lost and, very much to the credit of Boher Supreme (Balintore Brave - Knock Princess), he came right back at Mossend Apollo on the run home and nailed him on the line by the minimum margin, with two lengths back to Millridge Bolt. It a ninth victory from 31 starts for Boher Supreme and, of course, yet another winner for that outstanding dam, Knock Princess.
Three 12-greyhound sweepstakes on the night were sponsored by the track supporters' club and special mention must be made of the Pat Buckleytrained Dragon Shield, which made his class tell in a big way in an A1 525yds semi-final. At odds of 1/5, he won by nine lengths in 28.39 and, with the other semi-final being won in 29.31 by Savage Lad, defeat seems out of the question for Dragon Field in the final this Friday night.
Other winners last Saturday night: Westwind Sally, 29.97; Funny Weather, 18.31; Two Black Eyes, 29.58; Freds Choice, 18.28; Labana Zig, 29.34; Dubai Swift, 29.01; Savage Lad, 29.31; Andthen, 29.09; Five Alley Mick, 29.13.
