THE opening weekend of the season showed that many of the teams in West Munster are still getting into gear for the upcoming season, with many of the opening games being either postponed or rearranged. The matches that were played, all took place in Listowel on Saturday morning with Listowel Under 13s taking on Killorglin Under 13s and Listowel Under 17s challenging Killorglin Under 17s.

THE season opener was between Listowel and Killorglin Under 13s. Despite the long break, neither team seemed to show signs of rust but plenty of grit and determination with heavy tackling and great support play in attack shown by both sides.
The visitors edged the first half, fighting for a good score of 12-0, however, the hosts were in the mood for no niceties and gave their visitors a very unwarm welcome back onto the pitch and clawed their way back into the game with a well worked try to bring it back to a five-point gap. From that point on, every ball was contested with tenacity and courage, with Killorglin eventually showing that they had the greater hunger, putting a comfortable gap between them and their opponents.
Once the dust settled, Killorglin were the victors with the score line at 12-22. Eoin Evans was then awarded the Man of the Match and was then presented with an official IRFU Rugby ball by Listowel.

AFTER seeing their fellow club-mates defeated, the importance of the match seemed to be stepped up a few notches for the home team.
The match opened with the same intensity as the previous game, with great tackling and superb ball skills on display right from the first kick. The game was blow for blow with each team going for the jugular. At half time it was the hosts who lead, with an impressive 15-6 score line.
As the two sides restarted the game, the mood was clearly in favour of the leaders as they gave an impressive display in attack, running in three tries to stretch past their opponents in the end with a 34-15 result.
More games scheduled for next Saturday with fixtures to be announced on Radio Kerry Friday evening.
