KILLARNEY'S Dan Sugrue won the Irish Assistants Championship in fine fashion at Balcarrick near Finglas in Dublin last week. Rounds of 72, 72, 75 and 76 for a three over par total saw him win by two shots from Lucan's Lorcan Costello with Masserene's Noel Murray in third a further three shots back.
Sugrue, a brother of Tralee assistant professional John, was one of finest amateurs around in the late nineties and represented Munster at Boys, Youths and Senior Interprovincial level between 1995 and 2002. He turned professional soon after but it would be fair to say that he has not enjoyed the best of times in the paid ranks. This win, however, will do his confidence a power of good and just might be the springboard for future success. Let's hope so.
