ON Saturday evening last in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney the Clubs of East Kerry met to celebrate the O'Donoghue Cup and to award the top 15 players of the Competition with their All Star awards.
What a wonderful night it turned out to be. Sponsored as usual by the Kerryman newspaper and The Aquila Club at the Gleneagle, there were delegations from all Clubs present led by their Chairmen.
Chairman Dermot Griffin welcomed all present and thanked the very generous support of The Kerryman and Aquila Club for making the awards possible. Representing the County Board vice-chairman Ger Galvin noted the contribution that East Kerry made to County Board affairs over the years. He complimented the officers on their work and on being innovative in establishing the All Star awards.
Guest speaker was Radio Kerry's analyst and centenary winning Kerry captain Ambrose O'Donovan, who is the holder of three O'Donoghue Cup medals. Ambrose praised the All Star initiative and he exhorted all present to be proud of their clubs and their communities.
He complimented the GAA family on its support for the community as it deals with increasing unemployment, emigration and other difficulties. He paid compliments to the Dr Crokes club, wished them well in their quest for All Ireland glory and assured them that they had the full support of all in East Kerry and Kerry.
Ambrose regaled the attendance with wonderful humorous anecdotes from his days on the road as a Kerry footballer. MC for the evening was Weeshie Fogarty, a man who has contributed to East Kerry football as a player, referee and manager.
There was a good deal of speculation and discussion during the evening about how that team
would fare against other top class selections. It would be an interesting contest.
Chemist Donie Sheehan of Main Street Killarney presented all 24 nominees for the All Star award with a goodie bag of men's cosmetics, a treat which is much appreciated by the players.
Chris Brady is Young player of the Year and Colm Cooper received the Senior Player of the year award.
Congratulations to all those players.
