TRALEE trainer Tom Cooper was in brilliant double winning form at Fairyhouse races on Sunday and Monday, Irish Grand National Day, where he scored a lucrative and splendidly executed 96/1 double with 16/1 chance Eighty-barracks street in the two mile novice handicap hurdle on Sunday and Lucky William in the valuable Grade B Novice handicap chase on Monday both brilliantly ridden by Barry Geraghty.
On the former he always travelled well and racing in a closing fourth into the straight came to challenge at the last, staying on well, to triumph by 11/2 lengths from Lough Donnell Mist , for owner Nichoas Hartrey.
Described by his trainer as "a bit quirky, who runs well fresh, loves fast grouind and needs the cheekpieces", he will contest another handicap at Punchestown and will go chasing for the summer.
Geraghty's handling of Lucky William was exemplary as his persistence and class stone through as he produced the gallant top weight in thrilling finish to triumph by 11/2lengths from Last Time Dalbain justifying 5/1 joint favouritism in the process for the Garden Kingdom Syndicate.
Cooper also reports Forpadytheplasterer, in top form for tomorrow's John Smith Melling chase at Liverpool saying: "We're going for the Melling chase at Liverpool this week. It was the hill at Cheltenham that caught him out. The flat track at Aintree will suit him."
Meanwhile, Galloping Gander owned by Patricia and Maurice Regan, formerly from Listowel and now proprietors of the Newtown Anner Stud Farm at Clonmel, was a hugely impressive seven length winner of the opening two mile two furlong beginners chase at Thurles's final meeting of the year on Tuesday evening last under a splendid confident drive by Rathanny Tralee jockey Sean Mc Dermot.
Trained at Callan ( Co Kilkenny) by John O'shea, the hugely built six year old jumped for fun gaining valuable ground at every fence, closing right up six out he went to the front three out racing into the straight with two to jump Mcdermot was able to glance back at non existent dangers and safely negotiated the final two fences, romped home to win easily.
