THE Irish debating team from Colaiste Ide agus Iosef in Abbeyfeale were crowned All Ireland champions in the Comórtas Díospóireachta an Phiarsaigh in Portlaoise on Thursday.
Pitted against teams from Athlone, Thurles and Lucan in the final, they successfully opposed the motion: "Is feidir linn in Eirinn ár muinin a chur sa chead ghluin eile" (We in Ireland can put our trust in the next generation). The successful trio of students, Laura O'Donoghue, Patricia Murphy and Niamh Morris are all in second year in the school.
Over 150 teams from schools throughout Ireland compete in Comórtas Díospóireachta an Phiarsaigh. During their successful progression through the competition the Abbeyfeale team have been supported by their teachers Patricia Hennessy and Eileen Lawlor, who are extremely proud of their achievement.
Last year a team from Colaiste Ide agus Iosef also reached the last four of this All Ireland competition before losing out in the final.
