'Tour de Ballyfinnane' will get everyone on their bikes
FORGET the Irish legs of the Giro d'Italia in May, the first big cycle of event of the Spring will take place much closer to home at Ballyfinnane National School.
The inaugural 'Tour de Ballyfinnane' Cycle, organised by the school's parents council in aid of the school, will take place on Saturday, starting at 10am.
"This is the first time that we have done something like this, we were looking for something a little bit different."
"It was really driven by one of the parents, Sean Lally, who is involved in the Chain Gang cycling club," Parents Association spokesperson Ciara Keenan said.
"We are hoping to get a lot of cyclists out on the day," she added.
Those cyclists will have the option of two routes. The first a 70km trip will take cyclists west to Castlemaine, Inch, Annascaul, Gleann na nGealt, Camp, Tonevane, Caherleaheen, Farmer's Bridge and over the final climb of the day at Garraun on the return to Ballyfinnane.
For those looking for something a little less strenuous there is also a 45km route which takes participants east to Currans, Castleisland, Ballymacelligott, Tralee and back to Ballyfinnane via the Killarney Road and Gortatlea.
Refreshments will be provided along both routes and again at the and with a complimentary barbecue and entertainment waiting for cyclists at the finish line.
The event is being sponsored by O'Sullivan's Bike Shop in Killarney who will provide a support car for the 70km route on the day.
The cost of the cycle is €20 for route one or €15 for route two. Cyclists can pre register on the website www.tdb.ie or on the day from 8.45am.
