FAI JUNIOR CUP
The Park 2 Carrig Celtic (Desmond League) 1 (after extra-time)
WHILE all the dramatics were happening in Glin there was a fair share of excitement also at Mounthawk Park as it took extra time to decide the issue between The Park and Desmond League side Carrig Celtic in another FAI Junior Cup encounter. Indeed The Park had to come from behind to win the game in extra time after being on top territorily for a good part of the game.
The visitors had an early chance when Anthony Molyneaux was played in on goals and he was denied by a superb tackle by Mark O'Sullivan.
Now The Park began to enjoy a lot of possession without being able to put the killer punch together. Their goalie Tommy Moriarty had to be at his best to deny Ray Cahill with a good shot from outside the box.
At the other end the Carrig goalie Declan Greaney done very well to tip a deflected shot from Fergal Maunsell around the post.
Just coming up to half time the visitors went ahead when a superb over the top ball by Sean O'Connor put Seanie King through on goals and he beat the advancing keeper. Immediately afterwards Fiachra Dunne did have the ball in the Carrig net but he was ruled offiside.
The Park got the perfect start to the second half being awarded a penalty kick after just two minutes for a foul on Mark O'Sullivan and David Magee made no mistake from the spot.
Then they replaced Dan Robinson with Pa McCarthy and he was in the thick of the action right away wth an effort that went narrowely wide.
Down the other end Carrig went close with Ray Cahill becoming the provider for Donie Nolan and his volley was well saved by Park custodian Tommy Moriarty.
Neither side was able to find a way through for the remainer of the game and with parity prevailing the game progressed to extra time.
Three minutes into the first period of extra time The Park struck for what proved to be the winning goal and it was a great strike from just outside the box by Mark O'Sullivan.
Carrig done their best to try and engineer an equaliser but The Park held firm for a great win.
