ON the second weekend of Cup Final action, with the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League season coming to a close, the spotlight last weekend was on the Boys U-12 and U-15 finals down for decision.
John Murphy U-12 Cup Final
Killarney Athletic 0
The U-12 John Murphy Cup decider was between Killorglin and Killarney Athletic with the former going in as favourites. The missed out on winning the League by one win and were determined to claim the Cup to end the season with silverware, but credit to Athletic's youngsters they really put it up to Killorglin even when they went behind to a Dillon O'Neill strike in the first half. It stayed 1-0 to Killorglin until well into the second half. Indeed in that period the Killorglin keeper had made a number of good saves to keep his side ahead.
In tight Cup finals a touch of class is often needed to win and all year Killorglin's Gar Hassett has been scoring for fun. With 20 minutes to go he got the ball just inside his own half and while there were defenders chasing back and the keeper he beat he never looked like missing and rolled the ball into the corner of the net to put Athletic two up. Athletic now had to chase the game and were caught late on by two late Dean O'Callaghan goals which wrapped up the win for Killorglin.
Hassett was named Man of the Match, a fitting way to round off his very impressive season.
