Listowel Celtic 3
NK Dons 1
This competition is in memory of the late Jimmy Falvey of Killarney Celtic who died at a young age four years ago and it was a North Kerry derby at Pat Kennedy Park on Saturday where Listowel Celtic faced NK Dons a side that comes from the Ballyduff/Causeway area.
Very blustery conditions prevailed for the game with Celtic having the advantage of a strong gale behind them in the first half.
They made full use of it going ahead after just 3 minutes after good build up play from midfield Mike Woods stole a march on the NK defence and his low shot found the bottom corner.
They doubled their lead 9 minutes later with Woods involved again after being set up by Ian Murphy and his shot found the net with the assistance of a deflection off a defender.
Gradually NK Dons began to find their feet and they engineered a shot on goal by Keith Carmody but it missed the target while another effort from Eoghan Mc Kivergan was also wide.
Then Celtic seemed to be out of sight just after the half hour mark when Chris Elbell and Darragh Leahy combined to create an opening for Ian Murphy and he drilled it home from close range.
However The Dons responded very quickly with Mike Lynch doing great work to play in John Dowling and he applied a cool finish.
Then they had a huge let off when a thunderous free kick by Daniel Barden crashed off the crossbar with the Dons keeper stranded.
NK Dons almost pulled another back on the stroke of half time but Keith Carmody was denied by a great block from the Celtic goalie Maurice O'Keeffe.
NK Dons had a few half chances early in the second half but efforts by Ken Bowler and Eoghan McKivergan were fruitless.
Celtic's Daniel Barden brought a good save out of the Dons keeper Paudie O'Connor from a free kick.
Then The Dons had the ball in the net after a free kick but unfortunately for them a player had strayed offside.
Celtic missed a sitter in the 80th minute when Ian Murphy done the hard work to put in Mike Woods but he was denied by the Dons keeper.
The Dons almost pulled one back in the closing minutes but their best player on the day Keith Carmody was denied by a good save from the Celtic goalie.
Celtic march on to the quarter final and could go a long way in the competition.
