LISTOWEL Celtic's 50th anniversary celebrations ended on a real high on Saturday night, when FAI Chief Executive John Delaney announced that the Tanavalla grounds will host its second schoolboy international this September.
Taking the entire club by surprise at Saturday night's anniversary gala banquet, the special guest confirmed that the club will host the Irish and Estonian under 16 teams in two months' time.
"We had no idea about it, so it was a massive way to top off the celebrations," Club Chairman Aidan O'Connor said. "It was a fantastic offer and one we weren't expecting as we hosted Ireland and Germany in 2008, which saw one of the biggest crowds to ever visit Tanavalla. The club is extremely proud to be asked again."
Some 380 people attended Saturday night night's banquet at the Listowel Arms Hotel, where a number of influential players were honoured for their performances throughout the year. Club men David Fitzmaurice and Owen Beechinoor were inducted into the Listowel Celtic Hall of Fame, while the nine players who have presented the club at international level were also honoured. Among them was Savannah McCarthy who is the current captain of the Irish U16/17 team.
