KDL Youths overrun by Desmonds
FAI UMBRO YOUTHS
INTER LEAGUE Desmond League 5 Kerry District League 0 THE final scoreline tells the story of this game as Kerry were no match for the Desmond League in their opening round of the FAI Umbro Youths Inter League Cup at Clonreask in west Limerick on Saturday.
Normally when the sides meet at this age group the games are always close and very competitive but this was the exception to the rule as the home side won in a canter.
It was a most disappointing peformance by Kerry who never got to grips with the game and were playing second fiddle to a formidable home side that was always in control of the game.
However, Kerry showed all the early promise with striker Jesse O'Sullivan having an early good chance but he was ruled offside while the same player could have put Kerry ahead in the 6th minute but he was denied by a great block by the Desmond League goalie Andy Brouder.
However this was about as good as it got for Kerry with the home side on top in all departrments of play making it a long afternoon for the Kerry side and their management team.
Kerry leaked two early goals from set piece situations the first in the 8th minute when the Kerry defence did not deal with a Peter Shanahan free kick and Dilllon Griffin took full advantage rifling the ball to the net.
Four minutes later Kerry were found wanting again when they failed to clear their lines after another Shanahan free kick and James Naughton made them pay with a clinical finish. Six minutes from the break the home side struck again with a free flowing move and Bob Keogh finished to the net from close range.
Kerry looked in deep trouble at half time and their worries multiplied 20 seconds into the second half when Dillon Griffin set up James Naughton for his side's fourth goal. To their credit Kerry kept battling away and they went close on the hour mark after a free kick fell invitingly for Ryan Carroll but he could not hit the target. In the closing minutes the Desmond League scored goal number five with James Cussan putting in Paul Downes for a tap in finish.
Kerry are at home to The Limerick District League in the next round of the competition and nothing short of a win will suffice if they are to hold any chance of progressing to the knock out stages of the competition.
In the other game in the group Cork Youths scored a late goal to defeat Limerick District League 2-1.
