THE World Championships in 40x20 and One-Wall are well underway at the City West Arena and other venues in Leinster. Kerry has had mixed results in the championship, which began on Thursday. Dominick Lynch (Glenbeigh) is still on course for an Over-35 Singles and Doubles double after he defeated Pat Doyle (Wicklow) 21-1, 21-1 on Sunday. He partners former Wexford hurler Gavin Buggy in the Doubles.
John Joe Quirke (Glenbiegh) went down to Ciaran Burke of Mayo in the Mens B Grade. The C Grade saw a number of Kerry entries; Colm Ó Luing (An Ghaeltacht) had a great run defeating Brendan Ramsey (Carlow), John Conney (Clare) and Dara Burke (Kilkenny) to set up an all Kerry last 16 clash with Jack O'Shea (Glenbeigh). O'Shea had defeated David O'Brien (Tipperary) 21-6, 21-7 and Tom O'Connor (Meath) 20-21, 21-9, 11-1. Ó Luing then defeated O'Shea 20-21, 21-8, 11-9 but the An Ghaeltacht man went out in the next round.
Clive Counihan (Ballymac) reached the last 16 defeating Sean Foley (Kilkenny) 21-13, 21-7 in the process before going down to Mike Baker (Clare) 21-17, 21-20. Leon Seidler (Glenbeigh) reached the second round where he was upended by William Cahill (Tipperay) 21-14, 21-15; Seidler defeated Eric Lee (Minnesota) 21-20, 21-10 in the opening game. Rory O'Connor (Glenbeigh) also reached the second round, defeating Noel Mulryan (Galway) 21-5, 21-4 in the opener, where he faced top seed Peter Flanagan (Meath); O'Connor was unlucky not to force a tiebreaker going down 21-10, 21-20.
In the ladies section Sharon Twomey (Ballymac) is still in contention in the Ladies B Championship, after a 21-12, 21-20 victory against Sarah Flavin (Limerick).
However, the challenge of senior players Ashley Prendiville and Maria Daly (both Ballymac), ended at the penultimate stage on Monday. Prendiville defeated Bailey Chandler (Missouri) before going out to three ina-row chasing Fiona Shannon (Antrim). Daly reached the semi-finals with a 12-21, 21-4, 11-7 victory over Siebel Gallagher (Antrim) before losing out to Aisling O'Reilly (Antrim) in the last four.
The doubles competitions commence this Wednesday.
