HEADFORD Flyer, owned by Hugh O'connor fronm Headford Killarney and splendidly prepared at Ballyclough by Eoghan O'grady , won the featured Tipperary Cup at Clonmel Races on Thursday evening in game fashion under a splendid drive by Kevin Manning.
Idarah made it a searching test and a survival of the fittest in the soft ground. Travelling well he was right in contention on the downhill run to the straight, but came under pressure into the straight, but Manning riding at his strongest produced him with a strong winning run at the furlong mark where he stayed on in great style to win going away from Beau Michael. The well supported 7/1 to 5/1 chance, which was last seen at Wexford in April where he won his two mile furlong beginners chase will be kept on the go according to his trainer.
North Kerry Harriers, meanwhile, will hold their second point to point of the season at Gortnaskehy Ballybunion on Saturday evening, May 26 commencing at 4pm.
TRALEE jockey Bryan Cooper was once again seen to excellent effect, at Kilbeggan races on Friday evening, on 8/1 chance Gallant Fearns, for Gorey Co Wexford trainer Liam Kenny, in the three mile one furlgong handicap chase. Racing sixth at halfway he moved closer in fourth three out and was produced with splendid late timing to get on top in the closing stages from The Book Thief.
At Killarney races on Monday evening he produced another outstanding riding performance on Casey Top 13/2 to 5/1 joint favourite in the feature event of the evening, the Mcsweeney Hotel handicap chase of €23,500 over two miles six furlongs. Always prominent and jumping well he came to take it up at the second last, staying in great style, to win comfortably by four and a half lengths from Tranquil Sea for Wexford trainer Leonard Whitmore.
