Over 300 take part in cross-country schools championship

OVER 350 athletes from the following schools took part in this year's Kerry Schools Crosscountry Championships, held in sunny conditions in The Demesne, Killarney last Friday.

The rain which was prevalent in other parts of the county held off for the duration of the day's competition: Tralee CBS; Mercy Mounthawk Tralee; Tralee Community College; Tarbert Comprehensive; Presentation Listowel; St. Michaels College, Listowel; Causeway Comprehensive; Colaiste Ide & Iosaef, Abbeyfeale; Intermediate School, Killorglin; Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine, Kenmare; St. Brendans College, Killarney; Presentation Killarney; Presentation Milltown; Colaiste na Sceilge, Cahirciveen; Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne.

Kerry Schools medals were presented to the first six finishers in each category. Team medals were presented to the first three teams of four in each of the catagories.

The perpetual shield for Best Girls School was won jointly by Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine (Kenmare) and St. Brigids, Presentation Killarney, each with 6 points, followed by Presentation Milltown.

The perpetual shield for Best Boys School was presented to St. Brendans, Killarney with 9 points. Tralee CBS were second, Mercy Mounthawk were third.

The conditions were testing in places. Two of the athletes to impress were Niamh de Hora (Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne, winner of the Senior Girls 3000m, and David Kavanagh (Mercy Mounthawk), winner of the Senior Boys 5000m. David won the Intermediate Boys 4000m in 2012. Thanks to the officials who helped make the day enjoyable for all. RESULTS Minor Girls 1500m 1. Emma Dineen, Pres Killarney 2. North Munster Championships will be held on Thursday, January 24 at Salesians, Pallaskenry, Co. Limerick.

South Munster Championships will be held on Friday January 25 at Cork Institute of Technology, Bishopstown, Cork.

Munster School Championships will be held on Thursday February 7 at CIT.

Irish Schools Championships will be held on Saturday March 9 in UUJ, Jordanstown.

North Munster Championships will be held on Thursday, January 24 at Salesians, Pallaskenry, Co. Limerick.

South Munster Championships will be held on Friday January 25 at Cork Institute of Technology, Bishopstown, Cork.

Munster School Championships will

be held on Thursday February 7 at CIT.

Irish Schools Championships will be held on Saturday, March 9 in UUJ, Jordanstown.

Gneeveguilla AC 5K THE very popular Gneeveguilla AC 5K road series kicks off in Killarney on Saturday January 26 at 11am, with an entry fee of just €5. The remaing races in the series will be on February 2, 16 and 23. There will be prizes for Senior Men and Women, Masters Men and Women, Girls and Boys U15, 17 and 19, as well as fit for life sector. Participants must complete in at least three of the four races to qualify for the overall prizes. Entries will be taken at the Old Monastery from 10am.
