Over 200 take part in juvenile badminton singles championship

WHAT an absolutely wonderful, absorbing occasion it proved to be at the Sweeney's Costcutter, Tralee, sponsored juvenile singles County Championship programme which took place at the Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday last where almost 200 competitors took part in both the girls and boys events.

Certainly the game of badminton proved to be alive and well within the Kingdom of Kerry in Killarney on Saturday last with so many youthful enthusiastic disciples displaying their passion and exuberance for the sport in the heat of battle for County Championship glory. Munster Juvenile Inter-county

The Munster Inter County series will be played in Limericks U.L sports Centre on Sunday next and the Kingdom will field teams in the under 11-13 and 15 year old age groups.

The Kerry badminton Association owe juvenile coach, Mr. Bill Lacey a deep debt of thanks for the time and effort he has given to juvenile badminton within the County and wish him and his charges every success on Sunday next. Kerry teams Under-11: Ciara O'Mahony, Edel O'Brien (Killarney) Rachel O'Connor, Eimear O'Connor, Sean Kennedy and Kevin Griffin (Annascaul) Caragh O'Neill (County, Tralee) Dylan Geaney (Dingle) Sean Mulvihill (Kingdom, Castleisland).

Former Tralee winners go in Irish Laurels 

IT is a wonderful tribute to Tralee Track that the last two winners of its juvenile classic, Vans Viking and Farloe Calvin, and the 2014 winner of the Race of Champions, Sidarian Blaze, are leading fancies in the final of the Connolly's Red Mills Irish Laurels (winner, €30,000) at Cork Track this Saturday. It was a pity the Liam Dowling-trained Green Prince didn't qualify from the first semi-final last Saturday, but, after a busy season to date, he certainly lost no caste in defeat and surely one of the three stars mentioned will carry off the top prize of €30,000.

Quietly still in the mix in the Puppy Derby 

THE Tralee 525yds record-breaker, Quietly, is still there with a chance of victory in the Dublin Coach Puppy Derby at Harold's Cross, the final of which will be run this Friday. He encountered serious trouble in the second semi-final last Friday and did really well to finish third . He is not without a chance in the final and, with a purse of €22,500 at stake, connections would recoup a very sizeable percentage of the very sizeable money they paid for him.
