IT was back to action after a week's break at Tralee Track last Saturday nights and, while there wasn't exactly a flurry of activity in the betting ring, a good atmosphere prevailed inside the stadium itself and some excellent tote pools were generated.
Much interest centred on the €20,000 Pick Six, taking in three races at Limerick and another three at Shelbourne Park, and at least one Tralee client was standing very nicely after the Limerick races, waiting on two very fancied runners in Dublin and having all six covered in the last leg. It was not to be, however. The first of the fancied runners was beaten and, as it turned out, nobody won the €20,000, which is carried forward to this Saturday night.
At Tralee, an eleven-race programme was headed up by an open 570yds race and this was won in outstanding fashion by Toms Brett (Brett Lee - Shanless Lady), which Patrick O'Connor trains in Tarbert for Noreen McManus and Declan Moylan. Toms Brett had encountered very hot opposition in the recent Kingdom Derby, losing heats to the eventual winner, Shaneboy Alley, and to Razldazl Bugatti, and, over a distance which suited him well, he was very strong in the betting at 6/4, sharing favouritism with Maum Quenn.
He duly brought his superb finishing power into play to pull back the front- running Killahan Rocky and then drive on for a two- length victory over Hollys Secret in 31.24, with a length back to Lakota Spirit.
For trainer Patrick O'Connor and Noreen McManus, it was the completion of a very nice double as they also won the third race with 1/2 shot, Box Of Tricks, which clocked 29.49.
Other winners: Baltovin Tracy, 2919; Doing Our Bit, 18.04; Carmac Cyrus, 29.55; Lenamore Star, 29,65; Calums Court, 29.10; Discovery Flight, 17.81; Coventry Kid, 31.55; Changing Sky, 29.43; Glentar Wood, 29.21.
