Kerry schools on song at CIT

THE Aviva Munster Schools Track and Field Championships were held at CIT on Saturday, May 18 and, as usual, there were some fine performances on the day.

In the Minor Girls Rachel Bowler (Mercy Mounthawk) won the long jump and was second in the 100m, to the truly excellent Sarah Leahy of St Brigid's Killarney. Rachel Moriarty of Tarbert CS took the bronze. Sinead Warren of PS Rathmore won gold in the shot and Aoife Doyle of IS Killorglin gold in the discus.

There were three bronze medal winners in Intermediate girls – Clara Heinrich, Presentation Tralee, in the 100m, Laura Hallissey, PS Inbhear Sceine Kenmare, in the one mile run and Vanessa Dineen, Mercy Mount Hawk, in the 1,500m steeplechase.

Lauren Kenneally, IS Killorglin, won silver in the high jump and Kayleigh Cronin, St Brigid's gold in both the shot and the discus. In the javelin Rita Casey St Brigids was first and Allison Moriarty, Presentation Tralee, third. There were just two medals in the Senior Girls category – the pole vault was won by Katie O'Riordan, Presentation Tralee, and the 300m by Niamh de hÓra, Chorca Dhuibhne.

In the Junior Boys, Michael Foley, Tarbert CS, had a great run to win the 800m and David Kenny, St Brendan's won gold in the 1,200m race walk. Michael Linnane Mercy Mounthawk was third in the javelin. The silver medal in the Intermediate Boys 100m was won by Jason Foley, Tarbert CS, who also took silver in the 100m hurdles. Louise Ryle from Mercy Mounthawk was second in the one mile run and second place medals also went to Dylan O'Sullivan, St Brendan's, in the high jump and school mate Billy Courtney in the shot. The Intermediate Boys hammer was won by Adam King, Col na Sceilge.

There were four gold medal winners in the Senior Boys. From Mercy Mount Hawk Eoin O'Carroll, in the 100m, and Michael Grimes in the triple jump. PS Rathmore athletes Mel O'Callaghan and Andrew McCarthy won gold in the pole vault and discus respectively and Andrew also took silver in the shot. Back to Mercy Mounthawk for three more silver medals. One for David Kavanagh in the 1,500m and two for Eoghan Courtney in the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles.

Mercy Mount Hawk won silver medals in 4 x 100m relays in Minor Girls, Intermediate Girls, Senior Girls and Senior Boys. Laura Crowe (An Riocht) ran a lifetime best of 2 min 3.30 sec when winning the 800m at the Letterkenny international meet on Saturday last.
