IRELAND'S leading Harvest festival – the annual seven day Listowel Races – commence on Sunday next, September 16 for a week long extravaganz of top class, exciting and hugely valuable horse racing, which incorporates the very best of flat and national hunt racing.
Thousands of people from all over Ireland and beyond make the famous Listowel Races the venue for their annual holidays and having been coming to the Island course for many years and have witnessed the many new innovations provided by the vibrant race committee, who never rest on their laurels, but continue to add something new and different to the fixture each year. Sunday is Kerry Group Day at the track, which commences 2.20pm with all seven races sponsored by the worlds leading foods ingredients group, which features the €34,000 Dawn Milk handicap chase over 2ml 4f, on an all seven race national hunt card.
Monday's action, which commences at 2.35pm, features the €30,000 Premier Nursery handicap over one mile, along with the €22,000 John F Maguire Novice chase over 2ml 4f and the €25,000 ITBA scheme, novice hurdle over two miles, on a superb seven race mixed card.
Tuesday's card commences at 2.35pm, featuring the €45,000 Listowel Races Supporters Club Lartigue Hurdle Grade C handicap over two miles, on yet another exciting seven race card.
Wednesday is, of course, the Guinness Kerry National day, commencing at 2.05pm where the Kerry National is the major event of the week on that day. The Grade A three mile Handicap chase of €160,000 will attract the cream of Irish and Overseas runners and is strongly supported by the €22,500 Exchange Inn Ballybunion and Kevin Broderick Bar Listowel 7f handicap, the 12f Listed Edmund and Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel stakes of €42,500 and The Ballygarry House Hotel Tralee 21/2 mile novice hurdle of €22,500.
Thursday's action commences at 2.05 and features the Grade C Guinness Handicap Hurdle of €40,000euros over two miles on a most competitive eight race card.
Friday which is Ladies Day, action commences at 2.15pm, and features the €40,000 Guinness Handicap over nine furlongs, strongly supported by the €22,500 Southampton Goodwill Steeplechase over 2mls 4f and the South West Bins Novice Hurdle of €22500 over two miles on an eight race card.
Saturday's concluding day action commences at 2.05pm and features the MJ Carroll Arro Handicap hurdle of €25,000 over 2ml 4f, and the €20,000 Listowel races Supporters Club Slan Abhaile, qualified riders race over 1ml 6f, on another fascinating eight race mixed card.
Granted favourable weather conditions all attendance records could go next week at the famous Listowel Races.
