THE Southern Horse and Pony Racing season will kick off in Newmarket, Co. Cork this Sunday with a 12.30 start. There will be a 12-race programme before divides with the feature event the Newmarket Derby over 2 miles.
Southern horse and jockeys have made a fine start on the Midlands circuit with Keith Moriarty from Killorglin, Denis Linehan from Mallow, Richard Condon from Dungourney and Connor King from Kilbrin, Kanturk all making big impacts at Dartfield and Whitegate.
Denis Linehan was successful on English Bill and Darraghs Delight for Jerry Dalys Newmarket Yard who also supplied Richard Condon with his first winner of the season at Whitegate when Liss Lad made every inch of the running to win the mile and a half contest.
Liss Lad is owned by Leo Mccarthy from Cahersiveen and looks destined to go on to greater things. Keith Moriarty doubled up on his Dad Alberts pair Vodka and Swagger Jagger. Both horses were really impressive and will surely be Dingle contenders in early August. Keith finished the day as the leading jockey in Whitegate for 2012.
