JUST like he did at the last County Championship held at Deerpark, Tralee's Jonathon Goodall prevented a clean sweep by the Killarney club of the major honours at the County Strokeplay as his total of 14 under par was good enough to win the Gents Senior title by a single shot last Sunday.
As he did at the County Matchplay 12 months earlier, Jonathon denied Damien Fleming another county title on his home course with Castleisland's Declan McCarron beating Tralee's Jason O'Regan on count back for third with 11 under.
The Intermediate Gents grade was won by the home club's Ger Casey on four under par, two shots better than a trio on two under par namely Michael Foley and Kieran Buckley from Deerpark and Tralee's Gavin Carroll.
The Junior Gents saw a comprehensive win for one of last year's All-Ireland winning U-16 team with Conor McCarthy's 12 under par total seven shots better than one of his team-mates from last year Jason O'Brien in second. Castleisland's James Dignan was third in the grade with one under par.
The Ladies 11-18 grade was won by Betty O'Brien as she defeated club-mate Shelia O'Donoghue for the honour. Last week also saw the National Matchplay qualifiers take place in Castleisland with two from Deerpark and one from Tralee qualifying to represent the county in the Finals in Lucan, Dublin on the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Damien Fleming and Daragh O'Keeffe (Deerpark) along with Gavin Carroll will be the Kerry representatives in one of the game's premier events.
This weekend is the provincial version of the Matchplay Championships with the Munster Gents and Ladies competitions taking place at the Parteen course on the Limerick/Clare border. Kerry will have eight players in the Gents competition namely Damien Fleming and Tralee's Tony Blake (Senior), Castleisland's Aidan O'Connor, Tralee's Declan O'Connell and Deerpark's Johnny O'Brien (Intermediate) along with Tralee's Aidan O'Sullivan, Castleisland's Timmy Looney and Deerpark's Jason O'Brien (Junior). The County Board would like to wish all eight the very best of luck in Parteen this weekend.
