TEAM Garvey's St Mary's will seek to secure a place in this seasons senior men's cup final when they take on Dublin side Killester at the national cup semi-finals, which will be held in Neptune stadium this coming weekend.
SENIOR MEN NATIONAL CUP SEMI-FINAL
TEAM GARVEYS V KILLESTER
When: Saturday, January 12 Venue & time: Neptune Gym, Cork 2pm
It is very much a case of deja vu for the Castleisland boys as it will be their fourth cup semi-final in the past five years and they were successful in the three previous ones.
Killester are not competing in the league and this will make preparation for the St. Mary's side a bit more difficult. Player coach Brian Clernon acknowledges that this is a disadvantage.
"Tradition in Killester is that they are very strong as a club overall, they have always had very talented underage players coming through. As a team they are largely unknown to us and we will be very wary of this fact."
Team Garvey's have, of course, had the advantage of having the clubs annual Christmas to use as preparation during the past few weeks and the team which was split between the division one and premier sections enjoyed success in both competitions. However, Killester will have a wealth of experience with former superleague players Jerome Westbrooks and Johnny Grennell on in the squad and they will be coached by former super league player Jermaine Turner.
Turner will be well known to Brian Clernon as they will have met many time over the years when they both played superleague. Captain for Team Garvey's will be Dan Griffin, Griffin says he is looking forward to the game.
"We will need a huge effort both on defence and and offence to get through this one," he commented.
Garvey's are doing well in this season's league with six wins from eight games played. They will be looking to Griffin, Declan Wall, Andrew Fitzgerald and John Teahan who have been big performers so far this season to pull out all the stops this weekend as well as the remainder of the squad who are: Declan Culhane, Tom Fleming, Seamus Brosnan, Ruairaí O'Rahilly, Michael Broderick, Billy Wiseman, Maurice Casey, Daragh Jones, Viktor Velykis and of course player coach Brian Clernon.
Tip off for the Team Garvey's semi final will be at 2pm in Neptune stadium Cork this Saturday January 12.
