THE outdoor athletics season kicked off in style this weekend with the Leevale 2013 Track & Field Meet. Day 1 last Saturday saw Claire Fitzgerald of Tralee Harriers take gold in both senior ladies shot and discus.
In the Junior Mens 1500m David Kavanagh also of Tralee Harriers, took third place. Mel O'Callaghan of Gneeveguilla won bronze in the Senior Mens pole vault.
The Leevale programme on Saturday also catered for athetes trying to achieve EYOD (European Youth Olympic Days) or junior qualification standard. One such Kerry athlete was Jason Foley who came 3rd in the EYOD 110m hurdles - a fantastic perfomance for this athlete from Lios Tuathail who is only 16 years old.
Day 2 of the event on Sunday saw juvenile athletes from all over the country take part in a full programme of track and field events.
Orla O'Reilly from Tralee Harriers was top medal winner for Kerry, winning gold in both the U14 girls 100m and long jump, with team mate Rachel Bowler coming a close second in the U14 girls long jump. Peter O'Sullivan, Spa Muckross, won bronze in the U13 boys 100m.
