IT was another action packed weekend on the Kerry Community Games scene where there was plenty drama, excitement, joy and sadness and terrific sportsmanship all rolled into one.
On Friday last in the Tralee Sports Complex, the ever versatile Andy Keane oversaw the cycling on grass event where Duagh / Lyre were out in force. On Sunday last in Balloonagh School, Tralee the gymnastics competition was held and all age categories had very close situations where the first to fourth positions were extremely difficult to come by with a number of gymnasts in contention for the podium places. In Mastergeeha on Sunday last the U-12 and U-15 girls soccer competition was held where there were four teams competing in the U-12 group, whilst there were five teams competing in the U-15 group.
In the U-12 group Duagh / Lyre, Fossa, Listowel and Spa/muckross were all vying for the county title where each team had to play each other in order to clarify the gold medal winners. Listowel claimed first place, with Fossa in secondnd. Duagh / Lyre took third place having two draws while Spa/muckross claimed the fourth place certificates.
In the U-15 group Castlegregory, Annascaul / Camp / Inch, Listowel, Fossa and Duagh / Lyre all went into battle to win the right to represent Kerry in the Munster Finals.
Results: 1st Listowel, 2nd Duagh / Lyre, 3rd Fossa, 4th Annascaul / Camp / Inch.
The Judo competition is due to take place on this Thursday, May 24 in Firies.
All roads lead to Athlone this weekend for the National Finals where President Michael D Higgins will officially open the event on Friday. Kerry are represented by Rock St / Caherslee in table tennis and project, Killarney South in girls table tennis, Lixnaw in Under 16 project and culture corner, Currow in the set dancing, Moyvane / Knockanure in badminton, Boherbee / Cloghers / Manor in Group Dance, Killcummin in Group Music, Duagh / Lyre in drama, Listowel in group singing, Ballylongford / Asdee and St Brendans / Oakpark in U-13 and U-16 Choir respectively and Spa/muckross in Quiz and Irish Contemporary Dance.
There are also representatives in solo dance, music and singing along with several cross-country athletes.
Closing dates to note this week on Thursday, May 24 are the athletics and field events, hardcourt tennis, futsol, Gaelic football U-10. The closing date for all relay entries is June 14.
