Published 16/01/2013 | 09:16

THE County Juvenile Finals, in Tralee last Sunday, provided spectators with great excitement as the players of the future vied to represent the green and gold. The most dramatic game of the day in the singles took place in the U-11 boys competition with Dylan Dunne-Moriarty (Ballymacelligott) playing his heart out before conceding to Liam Smith (Glenbeigh) 15-13, 15-14.

The U-13 doubles final between Tommy Quirke/ Jason Clifford ( Glenbeigh) and Conn Ó Riagáin/ Ruaidhrí Ó Beaglaoich( An Ghaeltacht) proved a fascinating affair, with the game ebbing and flowing between the sides, to bring it to a tie-breaker with the An Ghaeltacht duo prevailing 11-9 to take the title.

Former Tralee winners go in Irish Laurels

IT is a wonderful tribute to Tralee Track that the last two winners of its juvenile classic, Vans Viking and Farloe Calvin, and the 2014 winner of the Race of Champions, Sidarian Blaze, are leading fancies in the final of the Connolly's Red Mills Irish Laurels (winner, €30,000) at Cork Track this Saturday. It was a pity the Liam Dowling-trained Green Prince didn't qualify from the first semi-final last Saturday, but, after a busy season to date, he certainly lost no caste in defeat and surely one of the three stars mentioned will carry off the top prize of €30,000.

Quietly still in the mix in the Puppy Derby

He encountered serious trouble in the second semi-final last Friday and did really well to finish third . He is not without a chance in the final and, with a purse of €22,500 at stake, connections would recoup a very sizeable percentage of the very sizeable money they paid for him.
