Team Garvey's 86 Fr. Matthew's 50 A COMPREHENSIVE win in Castleisland on Saturday night last ensures that Team Garvey's remain top of the Southern conference table in the Basketball Ireland's men's national league division one as the teams break for Christmas.
Team Garvey's were in control of the game from the tip. Declan Wall was in fine shooting form hitting 10 points in the first quarter, Michael Broderick was also in fine form registering six for the first quarter. Fr Matthew's did manage to keep with the pace in the early part with Denis Crowley breaking through the home team's defence, but Garvey's led by eight as the sides entered the second period of play.
Another huge performance in the third quarter by Wall and major contributions from all other players saw the St. Mary's boys extend their lead to 16 by the halftime interval. Coach Brian Clernon ran the bench throughout the game and Maurice Casey made his comeback from injury. Clernon's squad continued to widen the gap extending it to 26 by the end of the third and to 36 by full time. TEAM GARVEY'S: Declan Wall 26, Michael Broderick 14, Andrew Fitzgerald 10, Billy Wiseman 10, Dan Griffin 7, John Teahan 6, Seamus Brosnan 5, Tom Fleming 4, and Brian Clernon 4.
Team Garvey's lead the Southern conference table while Ulster Elks who had a big win over Ballon at the weekend lead the Northern Conference. The Northern Conference, however, now has just four teams following the fallout of teams earlier in the season. In the Southern conference this weekend neighbours and rivals Titans and Maree had a close encounter with Titans winning by just nine points while Kilkenny had a comfortable win over Donegal.
Team Garvey's next game will be the Cup semi final in Neptune Stadium on January 12. Tip-off is at 2pm. Next league game will be in Castleisland on January 19 against Kilkenny.
