IT was the calm after the storm at Tralee Track last Saturday night, 24 hours on from the GMHD juvenile classic final, but there was still plenty to entertain and a number of eye-catching performances were produced.

One of them was by a novice called Carhan Falls (Christmas Box - Derry Bluebell), which clocked a very impressive 28.98 (.20 fast) in winning the third race. Jointly owned by Francie O'Donoghue and Brian Delve, of Cahersiveen, Cashen Falls simply flew to the first bend from a trap 2 draw and she won unchallenged by four and-a-half lengths from even-money favourite, Lisahane Premier.

Over the sprint distance, two very notable performances were produced, the first by Melodys Sonic (Royal Impact - Remind Me Monday). This fellow was taking on five S4 opponents with 27 races between them and, despite easing in the betting from 1/2 to 4/5, he very quickly put them all to the sword with a dynamic start from trap 2. He, too, won unchallenged by four lengths from Ballyfidora Brook in 17.69 (.10 fast)..

Winning owner, Patrick Collins, of Ballylongford, was in Limerick where he saw Melodys Gamble, which he jointly owns with Patsy Byrne, run second to Kisses For Cloda and qualify for the semi-finals of the €80,000-to-the-winner Con and Annie Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake this Saturday night. The many Kerry friends of both would love to see Melodys Music making it through to the final a week later.

Seven spots faster than Melodys Music in another sprint was Clover Blue Boy (Black Shaw - Dons Cairdin), which Denis J Hutchinson trains locally for Michael Walsh, of Knocknagoshel. Joint favourite at 6/4, this fellow broke at the head of the field from trap 6 and, motoring around the first bend really well, he drove clear to score by three and a half lengths from the other 6/4 joint favourite, Boher Crash Back, in 17.62.

The programme also featured two semi-finals of a Tralee CBS 500yds buster sweepstake and the respective winners were Coolboy Bawn (27.49) and Satellite Masabo (27.52), while other winners on the night were Time On, 29.59; Killiney Crash, 18.06; Abbey Inn Baby, 32.19; Scart Battleship, 29.37; Amyville Lucy, 29.19.
