Mallow wins for Tralee jockeys Cooper and Enright

TRALEE jockeys Bryan Cooper and Philip Enright, were in sparkling winning form at the final meeting of the year at Cork Racecourse Mallow last Sunday, while Newcastlewest claiming jockey Mark Enright scored a splendid double.

Cooper continued his excellent winning strike rate at present on 5/1 chance Starkie, for Waterford trainer Henry de Bromhead, in the opening 2ml maiden hurdle, making every yard of the running on the heavy going. Getting the fractions spot on the pair readily contained the late surge of Strategic Bid inside the final 50 yards for a game success.

The feature race of the day was the hugely valuable 2-mile Hilly Way chase of €37,500 over 2 miles where Enright teamed up with the well supported 7/1 to 4/1 chance Days Hotel, for in form trainer Henry De Bromhead. Well placed from the outset, the sweet jumping 7-year old closed on the leading Blazing Tempo at the second last, and quickly gained that one's measure. Jumping the last, Enright was already looking around for non-existent dangers as Paul Carberry on Realt Dubh was only a distant second as Enright cruised home a hugely impressive winner, and will seldom ride an easier Grade winner this season.

Mark Enright, the current five-pound riding sensation of the season so far, scored a splendid and well executed double on 14/1 chance Great Oak in an eventful Grade 3 Mares novice chase for trainer John Nicholson, following the independent falls of Tarla and Cnoc Seoda at the final fence.

He followed up in the next race, the Mallow 2ml handicap hurdle, on Carlowsanta, on which he made every yard of the running, and wisely kept plenty in the locker for the long finishing straight to win comfortably.
